Chain link with a properly built and matched gate is one of the most durable, cost-effective fencing systems in Houston, TX. The gate is where most chain link installations succeed or fail — and where Griffin Fence's 47 years of Houston experience makes the difference.
The most common chain link failure point is the gate. Undersized frames sag. Cheap hinges wear out within a few years in Houston's humidity. Die-cast zinc hardware corrodes faster than galvanized malleable iron. A gate that does not close squarely or latch reliably is not just annoying — it defeats the purpose of the fence.
Griffin Fence uses galvanized or powder-coated malleable iron hardware on all chain link gate installations — not die-cast zinc. We size gate posts to handle the gate load: 1-5/8 inch line posts work for line fence, but gate posts carrying swinging gates need 2 inch or 2-1/2 inch pipe to resist the torque over time.
Walk gates, single driveway gates, double swing gates, slide gates, and cantilever gates — Griffin Fence fabricates and installs all of them in Houston, TX, from residential walk gates to wide commercial vehicle entries. Every gate is built to match the fence in height, finish, and material.
Every gate type has a right application. Here is how the main types differ and where each fits in Houston, TX.
Single-swing pedestrian gates in 3, 4, or 5 foot widths. 1-3/8 inch frame for standard walk gates. Spring closer and fork latch standard. Common for side yards and pool areas.
Up to 16 feet wide. 1-5/8 inch frame, 2 inch gate posts minimum. Swing gates require clear space for the swing arc — confirm before ordering.
Two leaves meeting in the center for openings up to 24 feet. Standard for residential driveways wider than 12 feet and commercial vehicle entries with adequate swing clearance.
Roll on a bottom track parallel to the fence line. For openings where swing clearance is not available. Ground track must be kept clear of debris. 2 inch gate posts standard.
No ground track — slides on roller carriers mounted to posts. Best for sloped driveways, wide commercial openings, and automation. 3 inch posts for spans over 24 feet.
Gates framed and posted to the structural spec of the planned operator. Slide and cantilever gates are easiest to automate; swing gates require the right operator selection and frame weight.
We measure the opening, discuss gate type and automation plans, and confirm post sizing and hardware requirements before quoting.
Residential under 8 feet typically does not require a permit. Commercial does. We confirm before fabrication begins.
Gate framed, posts set in concrete at the correct depth, gate hung square, hardware fitted and tested through full operation cycle.
Full gate operation test, latch adjustment if needed, and 1-year workmanship warranty coverage on every Griffin Fence installation.
Houston's humidity is rough on metal hardware. A gate installed with die-cast zinc hinges and latches will show corrosion and function problems within 3 to 5 years. Galvanized malleable iron hardware lasts decades in the same conditions. It costs more per unit but far less over the life of the gate.
Gate posts are the other critical spec. A line post handles wind load on fence fabric — a gate post handles that plus the torque of a swinging gate loaded by wind. Undersizing gate posts is the fastest route to a sagging gate that will never close square again without significant work.
The standard Griffin Fence residential driveway gate post is 2 inch Schedule 40 pipe set in concrete at 36 to 42 inches depth. Commercial driveway gate posts run 2-1/2 to 3 inch pipe. Cantilever gate posts for spans over 24 feet use 3 inch pipe as a minimum. These specs are not flexible — the loads are known and the post must match them.
If you need a gate replacement without replacing the whole fence, call us. We fabricate custom replacement gates, match the existing finish, and rehang them with correct post reinforcement when the existing post can be salvaged.
